Choosing a VPN protocol matters more than most people realize, because it directly affects your connection speed and how well your traffic is protected.
- WireGuard: Modern, fast, and lightweight. Best default for streaming, gaming, and everyday browsing.
- OpenVPN: Battle-tested and highly secure, but heavier. A good fallback when WireGuard is blocked.
- IKEv2/IPSec: Excellent for mobile because it reconnects quickly when switching between Wi-Fi and cellular.
- L2TP/IPSec and PPTP: Older options. PPTP is considered insecure and should be avoided.
Practical advice: start with WireGuard (often labeled as a custom protocol). If you hit blocked networks or instability, switch to OpenVPN. On phones, IKEv2 is worth enabling for reliable reconnects. The best protocol is the one that keeps you connected and fast without compromising encryption.
