Every time you browse the web, dozens of trackers are silently collecting data about your behavior. Understanding how tracking works is the first step to protecting your privacy.
- Third-party cookies — When you visit a site, embedded ads and analytics scripts drop cookies that follow you across the web. Browsers like Firefox and Safari now block these by default. Use Chrome with Enhanced Privacy or switch to Firefox/Brave.
- Browser fingerprinting — Even without cookies, websites can identify you by collecting your screen resolution, installed fonts, browser version, timezone, and device type. Use the CanvasBlocker extension or browse in a privacy-focused browser like Brave.
- IP address tracking — Your IP address reveals your approximate location and ISP. A VPN hides your real IP and encrypts your traffic. Choose a reputable no-logs VPN provider.
- Tracker blockers — Install uBlock Origin (the best all-around blocker) and Privacy Badger (learns and blocks trackers automatically). These extensions are free and block most tracking scripts before they load.
- Search engine alternatives — DuckDuckGo does not track your searches or build a profile of your interests. Unlike Google, it serves the same results to everyone for the same query.
Combining a private browser, a VPN, and tracker-blocking extensions dramatically reduces your online footprint.
